Festival Round-up – August
The month of August has been packed full of all kinds of enjoyable and interesting festivals, for the older festival goer, the younger generation and families looking for a weekend of fun. Here at Azure we’ve picked seven of our favourite festivals, giving you the lowdown on what each festival was about.
The Big Cheese Festival, Caerphilly
Here at Azure, we love a festival. Especially when that festival is jammed full of food tasting, musical performances and dancing! The Big Cheese Festival definitely provides all these plus much more and the fact that it’s free to get in makes it one of our favourite festivals of the summer.
The town of Caerphilly is famous for its Caerphilly cheese, which is rumoured to have been created in the town way back in 1831. It is believed to have been developed to provide coal miners of the town with an effective way of replenishing the salt lost through their gruelling ten hour shifts underground.
Held every year in the historic town since 1997, the festival is situated on the Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields, just a twenty minute drive from the Welsh capital, Cardiff.
This year’s festival starts on Friday 26th of July and continues over the weekend, ending on Sunday 28th. On the first day, many festival goers, both adults and children, will be competing in the annual Great Cheese Race! The race itself is staged around the grounds of Britain’s second largest castle, the magnificent Caerphilly castle, built in the 13th century. Every year there is a theme with participants having to wear fancy dress. This year’s theme is the Olympics, with prizes going to the best dressed and not to forget, the winner of the race itself! Sadly it is now too late to apply to take part in the race, but we’re sure that watching this fun filled event will be just as enjoyable.Aside from the Great Cheese Race, a packed entertainment programme will ensure visitors have lots of fun over the three days.
Festival goers can expect the following;
• Funfair & traditional funfair
• Firework display (Friday 26th – around 10pm)
• Re-enactment displays
• Musical entertainment
• Educational activities
• Food hall
• Craft stalls
• Activity marquee
• Tommy Cooper tent
There is so much to do at the festival, but if you just want to relax with your friends and family there are designated picnic areas on the site, allowing you to take in all the atmosphere the charming town has to offer. This year around 80,000 people are expected to experience the Big Cheese Festival, we highly recommend that you visit, it’s definitely one of Azure’s favourite summer festivals. Remember, it starts on Friday 26th July and ends on Sunday 28th, all ages are welcome and it’s free!

On the road with man’s best friend
5 tips for dog friendly holidaying!
Holidays are exciting times, but if you have animals with you, they can easily turn into stressful, not to mention expensive, rather than fun. Well, fret not dog lovers, we at Azure recognise this, and as such have a wide range of dog friendly motorhomes available to cater for not only us humans, but our four legged friends as well, to ensure your motorhoming experience is as dog friendly as possible. However, we can’t do it all for you, so here are our top tips to making the most of your animal accompanied break.
Pub preparation. A lot of pubs take dogs, but hide this light under a bushel. We Brits aren’t as forthright as our friends over the pond or elsewhere, and often understate our services, so it’s always best to call ahead and ask if the pub you’re planning on going to takes dogs. If they don’t – well, you won’t have a wasted trip, but if they do and you hadn’t called, you’d be none the wiser and probably without a pint to round the day off nicely.
Think about location. There’s nothing most dogs like more than a good walk, so think about this when you’re planning your overnight stops. You don’t want to be stuck with nowhere except the campsite to stretch both your and Buster’s legs, especially as most site owners don’t allow dogs off the leash. You also don’t want to be somewhere in the middle of nowhere, especially if you do want to visit a pub or similar in the evening, so be sure to plan ahead to make sure everyone, human or canine, is happy.
Take your dog’s accessories with you. Whilst it is easy to find replacement bowls, leads etc. for pooch (the UK is fairly littered with pet shops), if possible bring your existing ones with you, as it can be a waste of money to buy a new set then leave them behind when you leave (if you don’t want them in your luggage when you go home).
Dog healthchecks – before you come to us, make sure your dog’s vaccinations and microchip details are up to date. Much as we hope you don’t lose your pet on holiday, at least if you are parted, making sure his microchip is up to date will help you to get him back.
Vet locations en route. Be sure to research vet locations for all stopovers on your trip, or ask around if you are having more of an “amble” and have no set route. Accidents can occur at any time, and you don’t want to be in a situation where you don’t know where the nearest surgery is.
